White Structure

The Human Systems Interaction lab is a multi-disciplinary research center that focuses on various disciplines including human-centered design, human factors engineering, health informatics,  human-computer interaction, patient safety, and health system engineering. We apply evidence-based theories to transform the socio-technical change in healthcare by studying novel health technologies/applications, user-centered Artificial Intelligence systems, care coordination, and innovative socio-technical interventions.

Humanized AI systems: Designing User Centered, Trustworthy AI systems in Healthcare

We study design requirements of user-centered Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems in healthcare to improve clinicians-AI interaction. We specifically explore how trust is formed in this interaction, and design requirements to enable optimum trust between users and AI systems to improve the quality of decision making and related patient safety outcomes in a clinical environment.

Completed Research Projects

Enhancing Prematurity Decision Making for Parents

We developed a collaborative tool to be used for parents and providers in Neonatal ICU for critical decision-making regarding the premature delivery decision. We used the user-centered design approach to finalize the product. We currently work on how this technology impact outcomes including shared decision making.

Ethnographic field studies in healthcare

In collaboration with Enid Montague’s Human-Computer Interaction Lab at UW-Madison, later the WHEEL Lab at Northwestern, projects related to consumer health IT, trust in smart medical devices, and electronic health record workflow during primary care visits and the care delivery process were conducted. 

A Statewide RCT to Reduce Use of Ineffective or Unproven Breast Cancer Care

We designed a collaborative technology to be used during the encounter between oncology doctors and breast cancer patients to improve the shared decision-making process regarding the treatment

Creating Virtual  Surgery Targets to Improve Outcomes of Nasal Airway Surgery

We used the Technology Acceptance Model to develop decision aids technology for surgeons to improve outcomes of nasal airway surgery.

Consumer Informatics and Patient-Reported Data

This project has an implementation piece of consumer informatics tool to improve the collection of patient contextualized data and utilize data for improving various patient outcomes.

Engaging Veterans into PCOR for Lung Cancer Screening

This PCORI funded award aims to establish a Veterans patient advisory council and stakeholder group to generate research agendas  for Lung Cancer screening optimization

Designing a Shared Decision-Making tool for Lung Cancer Screening
